Valentine's Day is almost here and the question is what to get that special man in your life? Chains, crosses, medals, and rings are always a good choice. Here is a buying guide to help with finding the right gift in the right size.

Here are some steps to help determine the size:

Check shirt size and collar size if possible.
Size small- medium should be able to wear an 18". This will lay between the collar bone and the first button on a shirt. Some Men that wear mediums and have a thick neck may need a 20".
Size large- exlarge should be 20".
Over ex-large would need to go to 24"(this may hang down inside the shirt slightly)
If your wanting to buy for someone in the service, police or fire department a 24" is preferred so that it is inside the shirt and can be worn with the uniform.
Bracelets for men are normally a size 8".

Next is to determine the width of the chain. This will depend on the amount you want to spend. As a general rule most men do not prefer chains much under a 2mm(thickness of a Nichol).
If you are going to hang anything on the chain most pendants have around a 2mm bail. The most popular width sizes are 1.75-3mm for pendants. If the chain would be worn alone 2-5mm are popular.

Time for a little prediction here.

Bratz Dolls are going to be on the outs. Sweat pants with cheeky sayings across the seat are going to be passe. Skin won't be in. Instead, for the next couple of years or so, we're going to see a return to demure, even Edwardian/Victorian fashions. I foresee a charming fusion of tailored feminine and masculine elements in style.

We've been seeing a very slow movement towards this in some sectors over the past couple of years--as a mother I'm relieved to see that retail giants Target and Walmart no longer carry so much "prostitot" fashion for little girls. (And yes, I do apologize; I may have been a bit hasty in saying the HoD girls' line was okay, after having seen a few more adverts.)

Fashion, and hopefully the imitators, will look less to people like Eminem and more to folks like Andre Benjamin and his 'rebel gentleman" concepts. Yeah, I know Andre's Benjamin Bixby is a luxury clothing line, but if it does well, then some of the elements will sift downward.

As for color, it appears as if we're going to be seeing a gentler palette--saturated, softly intense color such as caramel, cocoa, rose, iris, kingfisher teal. If it's a color that looks as if it could be found in an 1880's silk evening gown, chances are it'll be à la mode.

And for jewelry? Colors that complement or contrast. I see a rise in brown gemstones.

Brown gemstones are pretty rare--brown is a color not often associated with jewelry. Yet brown diamonds are become more popular, and the so-called "chocolate pearls" are flat-out hot. Election Day Edition

In the spirit of today, I want to share a couple of American topics that are on my mind.

First, I'm thinking about the colors of our flag--red, white, and blue.

As we know, the stars represent the states. The red and white stripes represent the 13 colonies that rebelled against British rule. In the language of heraldry, red stands for valor, white represents purity, and blue stands for justice. The U.S. flag has gone through a couple of centuries' worth of permutations before the design we know today. If you're curious, you can check the very cool ushistory.org site for a fascinating flag timeline.

There are many other world flags that incorporate the same colors. Many of them do so because they had ties with Great Britain, which also uses the Red, White, and Blue color scheme. The colors of the French flag, contrary to what I used to believe, were not adopted out of admiration for the ideals of the American Revolution--rather, red and blue have been associated with France since the late Middle Ages. The flag of Liberia is similar to the U.S. flag to demonstrate its origin as a colony of freed American slaves.

And speaking of freedom, another thought that's been on my mind today is the issue of voting. It's not my place here to tell you to vote, and certainly not for whom. But in the spirit of sharing information, I thought you might find this voting timeline interesting. The right to vote is something that people and nations have fought over for centuries; some quietly, some violently.

I'll leave on a lighter note, with a look at rings that echo today's thoughts: red, white, and blue!

Burmese Rubies and Jade Import Ban

The Tom Lantos Block Burmese Jade Act Of 2008 signed by President Bush is now in effect. But what does this mean for the jewelry industries?

Helps to aid reforms in Myanmar, where the ruling military junta has a long history of human rights violations.
Estimated 90% percent of the worlds rubies come from Myanmar.
The exports of stones from Myanmar are the blame for funding the regime.
Gems that are processed, treated and manufactured in other countries using stones that originated from Myanmar are included in this ban.
Tiffany and Co. and Cartier stopped selling Burmese stones years ago because of Myanmar's treatment of people.
With limited supplies of the Burmese Rubies and Jade now in the United States the prices are sure to rise as the supply diminishes.
The question is how they will be able to determine for sure the origination of the rubies coming in. Using inclusions and spectroscopic features, internal growth structures and chemical compositions can help separate them but it can be very difficult.
More information will be provided on what further documentation will be needed to get non-Burmese rubies and jadeite into the United States.
Will this hurt the military junta or will it hurt miners and the thousands of Thais in the cutting and jewelry industry?
Canada's expected to offer rubies that are conflict-free and fair trade from mines in Greenland.
Tanzania also offers affordable rubies with pleasing reds.
Jade will be a lot more difficult to find a substitute.

I wish I'd been born in November. My mom probably does too, as she's the one who had to bring me to term in the middle of a Kansas summer in the 60's with no air-conditioning--and she's from the Great North Woods.

Aside from November being one of the more pleasant months on the Great Plains, one of my all-time favorite gemstones is the birthstone for November: Citrine.

Citrine is a member of the incredibly useful quartz family. Quartz has been a friend to humankind since we first started digging around in the dirt, as it is hard, beautiful, abundant, and possesses certain electrical properties. It has been used as a tool, as jewelry, and as a sacred object.

One can find it in 5,000 year-old megalithic structures; we use it today in electrical and optical components.

Citrine is a particularly beautiful member of this mineral family. Its name comes from the Latin group of languages known as Romance languages, which includes Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and many others--in all of these languages you'll find a word like citrus, which of course refers to the fruit.

So you'd expected to find gem-quality citrine in lemon-yellow, but it's also encountered in darker honey hues all the way to cognac and wine shades. These citrines are referred to as "Madeira citrines."

What's this have to do with jewelry, you ask?

Well, come on--the James Bond franchise has become synonymous with the luxe playboy life. Never mind the bad guys, never mind protecting the UK (and by extension, the world, eh?), James Bond flicks are all about the Benjamins. While we're wincing at $4 loaves of bread and scratching our heads over which bill to pay this month, we can rest assured that we can still live vicariously in his world. James Bond doesn't kick it in jeans and his women don't wander around in undies with the cotton popped off the elastic.

I'm looking forward to seeing what the women are going to be wearing. Here's a look at Gemma Arterton, as Agent Fields, in a formal scene. This classic and restrained look heightens the sense of Upper Upper Class far more than any garish gauchisms would. Makeup: perfect. Hair: perfect. Note the necklace: big chunky crystals. Even the crystals are muted, which completes the look of tidy elegance in a very different way than would gold or silver, or even diamonds. Take heed, my sisters who can't visit the mall for a few paychecks.

On a blingier note, British Royalty attended the world premiere of the latest Bond, "Quantum of Solace," at the Odeon Leicester Square in London. Daniel Craig looked suave even with his arm in a sling, and of course the actresses playing the Bond girls were dressed to the teeth.

As an example of such regal-appropriate splendour, Olga Kurylenko, the Bond girl in this film who doesn't end up in the sack with 007, wore de Grisogono diamond earrings and what looks a stacking ring design with pave rubies and diamonds set in white gold. The Ichthus Fish - This Christian Symbol Explained

Have you ever seen the bumper stickers on the back of cars and wondered... just what are those little fish symbols? Allow me to explain...

The Ichthus, or Jesus Fish, was used as a secret symbol by Christians during the time of the Roman persecution.

When two Christians met, one would draw half of the arc upon the ground with a stick, and the other would complete the Christian Fish symbol.

Thus it was possible to identify other Christians without risking detection by the Roman authorities. Fortunately, today Christians can display proudly the symbol that was once swathed in secrecy.

To delve into the deeper, technical meaning of the Christian fish symbol, Ichthus (pronounced ikh-thoos) is the Greek word for fish. In Greek, the spelling would be IXOYE, the letters being Iota, Chi, Theta, Upsilon, Sigma. It is a Greek acronym, the letters standing for the Greek words "Iesous Christos, Theou Uios, Soter." Or, in English, "Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior."

So, noodling about looking for Angelina Jolie stuff, and coming up with nothing that I haven't seen a hundred times before, I turned my attention to other, almost-as-luminous stars.

Seems that Beyonce Knowles, her sister Solange and their mom, Tina, are launching a jewelry line to round out their clothing line. Just as the Olson girls have done, but I have a feeling the results will be more palatable. Come on--Beyonce vs. Mary-Kate and Ashley? Once the jewelry arrives in Spring 2009, we'll do a little contrast and compare, shall we?

Sources say we're looking at a possible price range of between $16 to $68, which sounds a heck of a lot better for me and my daughter than the Scary Twins' stuff that is apparently going to command a price up to and over $500.

House of Deréon

I've heard HoD decried as tacky, but after examining the junior Dereon line, I'd rather buy those clothes than what Mal*Wart offers--Hannah Montana and MKA.

And I'd rather have Beyonce as a role model for my daughters than Miley Cyrus and the Olson twins. Beyonce is a strong young woman who laughs a lot and married the man she loves.

The Olson twins always look tiny, scared and have rotten posture. If I were their mom, I'd send 'em to horse camp.

The Lady Herione became ill and was put to bed where the next day all that was found of her and the opal were ashes. The public thought the author was warning everyone of the bad luck of Opals and stopped buying the gem. The opal market crashed and took prices down 50%. Nearly 50 years later the opal market was finally revived. Gosh you would think we would have learned from that before believing that Orson Wells was announcing aliens in the War of the Worlds! I have to admit, the Sapphire is not my favorite stone. My favorite color is purple, and so I love the Amethyst.

There is something very special and noble about those who serve as firefighters. Each day, they bravely put themselves in harm's way to rescue those in need.

The Purity Rings Controversy: Jordin Sparks, the Jonas Brothers, and their Purity Rings

Oh my, but a storm has been brewing lately in the media regarding purity rings, and I've been following it with interest. As you may or may not know, at the MTV Video Music Awards recently, host Russell Brand poked lots of fun at the Jonas Brothers (ages 16, 19 and 20) for their purity rings and strong support of abstinence until marriage.

American Idol winner, Jordin Sparks (who also sports a purity ring), got a bit irritated and defended the Jonas Brothers in an unscripted rant by saying, "not everybody- guy or girl- wants to be a slut."

She didn't intend to imply that any teen who doesn't wear a Purity Ring is a big tramp, but she did underscore the growing popularity of purity rings and "abstinence only" programs among teens in the last few years.

Personally, I think Purity Rings are a great idea, if they are balanced out by some basic sex education and common sense: If a teen falls off the purity wagon and indulges in sex with their boyfriend or girlfriend, they need to know to use a condom!

Who wears jewelry, for the most part?

Women. The most gorgeous pieces of jewelry are aimed at women. Blazing diamond wedding sets, sophisticated onyx earrings, Mystic Fire Trillion-cut rings.

And yet it seems whenever I surf the net, or flip through a magazine, the images for jewelry depict a man and a woman. Is the woman giving the man something lovely and platinum? Nope. Is the man congratulating the woman on her fantastic taste and dollar savvy? Nope.

What's happening is the woman is getting all teary-eyed because her guy has finally gotten on the clue bus and gotten her the bracelet, brooch, choker, what-have-you that she's been admiring in the store window for 3 months.

I used to feel bad because my husband refused to buy me jewelry. He didn't want to make a mistake, he'd tell me. He didn't want to give me something I might not like. So if I wanted jewelry, it was up to me to get it.

It took me a long time to get over that. After all, we've been conditioned (thanks, DeBeers) to believe that our spouses, fiances, boyfriends, etc., have to be the ones to buy us the pretty.

Just like busty women shouldn't wear turtlenecks, nice women with men shouldn't have to go out and buy their own jewelry.

I call BS on that.

If it's the 21st century, I'd better have a job, and I hope that I could be able to reward myself with a little more than the occasional mani-pedi from time to time.

I was hanging out with my niece and her over-sophisticated friend this weekend.

They were looking at a People magazine and ran across an item about the new Mary-Kate and Ashley jewelry line.

“Oh, no,” said her friend with a curl of her lip. “Golden brass? That’s so jank.”

Out of curiosity, I hopped online to find examples. I'd like to be able to say I liked it...but I thought it was awful.

The new, the odd, the overpriced: the Elizabeth & James Jewelry Line by Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, in collaboration with jewelry designer Robert Lee Morris.

Instead of being real gold, they are charging over $500 for a bracelet made of something called "golden brass." An alloy, perhaps? For $525, it should balance my checkbook, and clean my cat box! Ok, maybe if it was exquisitely beautiful, I could see that price tag... but my niece's friend was right.... it's totally jank.

I was a bit surprised that Mary Kate or Ashley could even get bracelets to stay on their wrists, as anorexic as they are. For heaven's sake, will someone force-feed them a sandwich?

To be fair, the bracelets aren't as bad as the dagger and snake necklaces... or the 80's-era dangle cross earrings, once again of "golden brass" for $155.

Has taste gone the way of the Dodo? Apparently, the Olsen twins can't buy "pretty," and neither can they design pretty jewelry.

Praying Hands Pendants - The Power of Prayer

During college, at a personal low point in my life, I remember going to visit my father in Georgia. I remember unloading on my Dad, and complaining about the state of my life, and the general misery of existence.

In response, my father gave me a tiny plastic statue of a pair of praying hands. He also gave me an empty medicine bottle, and told me that when he got really down about something, he would look at the praying hands, and remember the Serenity Prayer. Then he would write his problems down on a piece of paper.

After a couple of weeks, he would take the paper back out of the bottle and read off his list of problems. Usually, he found that the things he had been the most worried and stressed out about had been completely resolved, and were no longer even an issue!

His point? Trust in God, and stop worrying unnecessarily. All things pass with time. Change the things you have power over, and accept those things over which you do not. My dad is a wise man. So my anniversary is next month. Sadly, although I've been married for 17 years, I never had an engagement ring. The closest thing to even a promise ring I had was my then-fiance's high school ring, which I wore on a chain around my neck while I was in college. (How old school can you get?) So when my female friends and acquaintances over the years have become engaged, I've always asked to see their diamond rings (if I knew they were wearing it). Usually this request doesn't even need to be voiced.

And in looking, I've always wondered how the ring would look on my finger. With some good friends, I could ask to try it on. And I'd always be just a touch wistful.

The typical engagement ring looks like this: a plain or lightly engraved yellow gold band, with a diamond solitaire, round cut. Here I'm showing you a moissanite ring as illustration.

That' s a tradition you can't go wrong with.

Chivalry--Not Just for Boys

I was talking with a friend the other day about purity rings. Mind you, I'm always leery of a promise not to do something, but the way my friend explained things, it made a lot more sense to me. And then the light bulb went on.

"The idea," she said, "has expanded to more of a spiritual and life purity concept. Just because you're behaving in a chaste fashion doesn't mean you're behaving well in other ways. So some people have adopted purity rings as a promise towards honesty, kindness, integrity--those ideas as well as chastity."

"Oh!" I said. "Chivalry!"

Many people think of chivalry as the 'old-fashioned' courtesy a man of certain generations shows women. Opening doors, that kind of thing. And so they don't really think of chivalry applying to women and girls. But take a look at the real components of some knightly virtues:

Whether it's an engagement ring or a gemstone ring, my advice to men is to let a woman pick out her own jewelry. It's great that you want to get her a surprise gift, and believe me when I say we appreciate that you want to get us jewelry! (Isn't it the best gift there is?!) However, in my opinion you should at least have an idea of your mate's preferences before you attempt to surprise her.

My ex-husband had terrible taste in jewelry... and he loved surprises. This made for a series of unfortunate bracelets and rings that, while they may have been cherished by some, were nowhere near my style. I pretended to love them, wore them for awhile, and then promptly dumped them in my jewelry box, never to be seen again.

When it came to my engagement ring, I cut him off at the pass. I hinted that if asked, I wouldn't say no, and then I showed him an online picture of the wedding set that I wanted. This worked magically, as a year or so later, he proposed with that very ring.

Opinions abound... some say that it doesn't matter a bit whether a person's finger is branded by an outward Diamond symbol... what matters most is the commitment in one's heart.

I want to stress that neither choice is right or wrong in my opinion.

If you are looking for a cross endowed with a rich religious heritage, look no further than the Jerusalem, or Crusador's Cross. It carries a tale of faith and of battle, of uneasy alliances and holy quests. Some of those who fought in the Crusades did so to spread the one true faith, some only to seek wealth. But the story of this Cross is also the story of a man, Godfrey de Buillion, who would come to rule Jerusalem, the "land flowing in milk and honey."

The Jerusalem Cross is thought to have been the personal coat of arms of Godfrey de Buillon, who helped to take over Jerusalem in 1099, during the first Crusade. He was named ruler of the city, but refused to take the title of 'king' in the city where Christ had died. Thus, he was christened 'Defender of the Holy Sepulcher,' or tomb of Christ. Although he had allowed his army to loot the countryside, he later made peace with the Emporer of Byzantium, Alexius I, and formed a shaky alliance with him against the Turks.

Godfrey was known as a good and pious man, and he was later included among the group of exemplary knights known as the Nine Worthies.

One theory on the origin of the Jerusalem Cross is that during the time of Charlemagne, a similarly patterned flag waved above Jerusalem, a banner of white with crosses of red to depict the blood shed by Christ for our sins. When Geoffrey de Bouillon took over control of Jerusalem, he adopted the same pattern, but with the five crosses in yellow.

The yellow crosses on de Buillion's arms were famous for breaking the rules of heraldry. The color white symbolizes silver, and yellow symbolizes gold. A long-established rule of heraldry states that there will be 'no metal on metal'. Thus, the yellow crosses on a field of white are a definite rule-breaker. This may have been done deliberately, as a 'dimandanti,' or 'questioning arms', whose purpose is to shock those who see it, and draw attention to the choice; and, in this case, to make them think about the meaning of the cross, the representation of Christ's suffering and sacrifice for our sins. Perhaps, it was hoped they would contemplate their own level of devotion to their faith.

Today, the Crusader's Cross is a popular tattoo. During the Crusades, many soldiers tattooed themselves with a cross on the wrists or hands to show that they wanted to be buried as Christians if they fell in battle.

Some interpretations of the five Crosses of the Jerusalem Crusader's Cross:

They can represent Christianity as spread by the people to the four corners of the earth, the large center cross symbolizing Jerusalem, where the mission began.

The four evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, with Christ at the center.

The central cross is made up of four T shaped Tau crosses which can stand for the Old Testament teachings. The four smaller Greek crosses represent the four gospels of the New Testament.

The five crosses can represent the five wounds of Our Savior.

In any case, the Crusader's Cross was a coat of Arms of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, which lasted only from 1099-1203 A.D. Today, it is undoubtedly a symbol of Christ's love, and an emblem of his Church.

St. Francis of Assisi is my favorite saint of all time. Born the son of a wealthy merchant, he wanted for nothing during his misspent youth. St. Francis knew sin, and enjoyed drinking and parties. An extremely likeable young man, he caroused nightly with a large group of friends who indulged in vice and debauchery.

However, St. Francis' life was destined to belong to God, and several events in his life, including a serious illness, greatly changed him. He renounced sin, and began to live in abject poverty, putting no store in material things. He founded the order of the Dominican Friars, and his symbol was the Tau Cross.

At one point, Saint Francis stretched out his arms and announced to his Dominicans that their religious habit, or tunic, was in itself the Tau cross, and represented their lifelong devotion to God. In his mission of administering the gospel to the lepers, the least of society, the Tau Cross became known for its protection against the plague and other diseases. A great believer in the compassion of Christ, and known for his rapport with animals, St. Francis adopted the Tau Cross - which looks like a Greek "T" - as his crest, representing his pledge to serve God and man.

Today is my Birthday. Formerly a time for celebration, as I get older, it is more a time for... trepidation. Not that I'm unhappy. I'm not.
